Job Summary:

The Director of Employee Relations is responsible for providing leadership and direction to the Employee Relations team by ensuring operational excellence and oversight for day-to-day issues. Provides leadership to complex employee issues including FMLA, ADA and legal matters. Achieves functional success through coordination and partnership at all levels of the organization. Maintains appropriate talent and provides leadership support to the HR Generalists.

Essential Functions:

 

  • In partnership with the Vice President of Human Resources, contributes to the strategic development of the Employee Relations function by developing a progressive, business focused employee relations strategy that meets the current and future needs of the organization. Identify and implement positive employee relation programs, in consultation with relevant stakeholders, that will lead to a more efficient and motivated workforce.
  • Serves as an expert in employee relations providing guidance and oversight to investigations and sensitive complex employee issues, seeking legal counsel as needed. Ensures appropriate collaboration with legal and VP of HR for those issues representing significant risk to the organization. Monitors employee relations-related actions, decisions, communications and training to ensure executives and managers understand and apply sound program practices.
  • Manages unemployment claims processes and third party communications, ensuring timely responses, hearing communications and attendance, and provides monthly reporting on same.
  • Develop analytics to identify non-profit trends within a business unit via metrics. Makes recommendations for policy or process modifications and or educational training opportunities. Identify opportunities to reduce risk through risk mitigation analysis and by strengthening policies and providing training to HR Generalists, business leaders and managers, as needed.

  • Ensures operational consistency and compliance of services provided.
  • Ensures that the appropriate HR policies and procedures are applied based on business needs and, in partnership with the Vice President of Human Resources, ensures compliance with federal and state regulations as they pertain to employment laws.
  • Provides daily and monthly performance feedback and coaching to team members; monitors the development and training needs of team members in order to improve performance and promote continuous learning. Responsible for achievement of first call resolution by encouraging and improving the accuracy and efficiency of team members.
  • Able to react to change productively and handle other essential tasks as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Other Functions:

  • Provide support and back-up to Human Resource Department as needed.

Qualifications and Requirements:

 

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources Management, Business Management, Social Sciences or related field.
  • 8 to 12 years (minimum of 8) years of human resources “Generalist” experience with an emphasis on employee relations, with at least 3 of those years in a leadership/management role in a large HR Department, or a degree of Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) from an accredited law school with experience in the handling and resolution of labor matters.
  • Demonstrated superior Conflict management skills, strong understanding of employment law including FMLA, ADA and the interactive process; ability to influence leaders at all levels of the organization, strong communication skills both oral and written, customer orientation, strong analytical skills and the ability to apply those analytics to achieve problem resolution
  • Strong training and development background.
  • Ability to travel by car/plane, potentially up to 25%.

  • PHR/SPHR
  • Bilingual

 

Physical Demands:

 

Must be able to read, write, and communicate both verbally and in written form to express and exchange ideas. While performing the responsibilities of this job, the employee must be able to access all components of work station and other office equipment. Frequent typing, writing, bending and twisting. Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds.

 

Work Environment:

 

General office environment with moderate noise. This position is mostly sedentary, involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. A busy environment with many unscheduled interruptions. Frequent computer use at workstation for extended periods of time. Public contact position requiring appropriate business apparel.
