Job Summary:

This a contract position working with Unaccompanied Children (UC). The Contractual Registered Nurse is primarily responsible for traveling with UC by air or ground transportation while directing and ensuring the quality of medical services, treatment and/or interventions required by the UC during travel. All duties will be performed based on the Contractual Registered Nurse’s education, training, and experience within the scope of the Contractual Registered Nurse’s license.

Essential Functions:

  • Understand and comply with SWK and Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) policies and procedures.
  • Review medical records and treatment plans for UC traveling with RN.
  • Prepare written reports to deliver to appropriate audiences as needed.
  • Travel alongside and ensure necessary and required medical care and services are provided to UC as needed on trip.
  • Administer appropriate and quality medical-related care ensuring the health and safety of the UC.

Other Functions:

  • Maintain confidentiality in all areas including medical information and Program operations.
  • Maintain professional and ethical standards guidelines by Southwest Key and other relevant entities.
  • Must be available to travel (including overnight) to other cities, states, and other ORR or SWK sites as needed in order to support necessary Program operations.
  • Demonstrate the ability to react to change productively and handle other essential tasks as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Nursing degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing or Health Sciences; RN or NP and Licensure according to State requirements.
  • Two-five years of full-time direct service delivery experience.
  • Must possess medical assessment and treatment skills with diverse populations of children/adolescents
  • Must demonstrate exceptional:
  • REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • LANGUAGE SKILLS: Bilingual. (Spanish/English) Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the professional community. Ability to communicate on an effective level with both UC and staff from a variety of disciplines.
  • Compliance with pre-service drug testing
  • Cleared Tuberculosis test results.
  • Immunization documentation, Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Td/Tdap), Varicella, Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), Hepatitis A and B and Flu during season.
  • Cleared background check from appropriate entity.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule and be on-call including evenings and weekends.
  • Comply with annual training requirements/licensure/certifications.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of hire.

Skills Preferred:

  • Three years of full-time experience in a hospital, clinic, medical record department or physician’s office.
  • Three years, experience in file maintenance working with troubled adolescents or youth services; may include part-time, volunteer or internship experience.
  • Sensitivity to the needs of a diverse UC population
  • Five years of full-time work experience (including one year working with UC or related population) preferred 
  •  Experience must focus on community-based programs, and/or direct practical experience with UC.

Physical Demands:

  • Bending, stooping, and lifting a minimum of 15-25 lbs. required to complete daily tasks.
  • Must have the ability to remain in standing position for extended periods of the work day.

Work Environment:

Ability to work a flexible work schedule is required. Work schedules are subject to variation from time to time depending on the needs of the Program. The work is performed in a shelter setting which operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. In order to satisfactorily perform all job duties for this position, medical provider and staff are expected to be available to work at any time as directed by his/her supervisor and be available for travel including one or two day overnight trips.
